Seventh Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest Rolls Out

Can you use toilet paper to make a beautiful wedding dress? If you can, you just might win $1000!

Everyone likes to save money here and there. And for some, saving money on weddings is more than a hobby, and a little less than an obsession. Roxie Radford, Laura Gawne and Susan Bain operate the popular website www.Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com.

This year, they will host their seventh annual “Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest” based on the classic wedding shower game where contestants create a gown made of toilet paper. The contest will run from May 5, 2011 to June 17, 2011. Winners will be announced on July 7, 2011.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $1000, the second place winner will receive $500 and the third place winner will receive $250.

Here’s How to Enter:

First: Plan your design.
Second: Enlist a friend’s help (optional)
Third: Grab some Toilet Paper, Tape and/or Glue and/or Needle and Thread (that’s all you can use)!
Fourth: Make the dress on your model or mannequin and take some digital photos (front, back and side). Video clips are welcome but not necessary.

Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest

Cheap Chic Weddings.com is holding it's 2011 Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest. This is our 7th year holding this fun and funky contest. Each year contestants make a wedding gown using toilet paper, tape, glue and/or needle and thread. They also create a headpiece. Some previous contestants made little extras as well, like purses, bouquets and even shoes. But the only items required to enter are the dress and headpiece.

The official date and rules of our wedding contest will be announced very soon. We are going to be posting all of the information needed to enter the contest. So check our site and our ezine for all of the details. Be sure and read over the rules carefully as they may have changed from previous years.

If you would like to enter this amazing wedding competition, now is the time to be thinking about your dress design. But don't make the dress at this time because the rules aren't published as yet and we wouldn't want you to have to start over.

Some of our past winning dresses have been made in all different lengths. They have all had different design elements as well. For example, flowers, pleats, ruffles, molded paper to look like embroidery, basket weave, lace, braiding, corset strings, paper mache birds and even working toilet paper buttons.

Fruit Delights For Your Bridal Shower

Fruit Delights

I came across some recipes in an old cookbook called "Gems From Georgia Kitchens" that you might like.
They sound kind of girly and would be perfect for a bridal shower and they're really good.

The first one is a fruity drink that isn't exactly a punch. It's called

Cold Fruit Delight

1 can Mandarin orange sections 2 cups membrane-free grapefruit sections
1 package frozen strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1 package frozen red raspberries 1 can pineapple tid-bits

Drain orange sections. Mix all other fruits with their juices. Chill in bowl set in cracked ice. Serve in punchcups or small brandy glasses, even a bigger wine glass. A less expensive alternative would be pretty plastic glasses. Now they come in beautiful colors and look very impressive. Fill them about half full then fill up with chilled champagne as served. Garnish with mint sprigs. This drink would also be good for a wedding breakfast. You could use sparkling wine instead of champagne or if an aloholic drink is not your bag use ginger ale.

Another great recipe that I had as a young woman at my grandmother's is a wonderful dessert that is so easy and so delicious. Everybody will love it. It is called

HEAVENLY HASH

Large can fruit cocktail
Small can crushed pineapple
Small jar maraschino cherries
1 cup chopped pecans, more or less depending on taste (optional)
1 cup fresh whipped cream , more or less
1/2 coconut, more or less depending on taste
Bag of miniature marshmallows or large ones cut in quarters.

I could never get enough of this. It really was heavenly.

Stocking Your Bar With Wedding Wine And Cocktails

Are you planning on serving liquor at a pre-wedding or wedding celebration? Well, we have a few tips for you! Considering your budget, OF COURSE, first plan what you want your bar to be. It is perfectly acceptable to have a wine and beer bar these days. Doing a wine and beer bar can definitely be easy on the pocketbook. One other money saver is to serve ONE signature drink along with soft drinks. If a full bar is in your budget, stick to the basics and everyone will be happy!
For the wine and beer bar:
Stock 4-5 six packs per 10 people and about 5 bottles of wine per 10 people.

For the full bar:
Stock Vodka, Rum, Gin, Scotch, Bourbon, Whiskey and Tequila. The most common rule of thumb here is about 20 drinks for every 10 people. Double that if the party goes long and/or includes dinner.

A bottle of wine yields roughly 5 servings.

A 750 ml. bottle yields 14-16 cocktails.

A 1.5 liter bottle yields about 40 servings.

For mixed drinks…have on hand…or consider having…juices like grapefruit, orange, cranberry and tomato.

Be sure to have plenty of tonic, club soda, ginger ale, and lemon lime soda. Rule of
thumb here is about 4 liters per hour.

Depending on the concoctions you plan on making, you may need… Bloody Mary mix, Margarita mix, grenadine, simple syrup, vermouth, salt and sugar, garnish, milk and cream

The number one thing to remember is lots of ice!!! To keep all of this easy, cheap and no-hassle, our best tip is to keep things as simple as you would like them to be.

Fall is becoming more and more popular in the wedding planning world. The season itself conjures up thoughts of deep, rich colors, cool breezes, and hearty food. The very best part of Fall is that you can easily use what nature has to offer for any occasion.

The following tips and suggestions can be used for any wedding related celebration. Use them for engagement parties, rehearsal dinner or even your reception.

Nothing says fall like the classics. Use colors like brown, deep red, golden yellow,cream, deep green or copper.

The HOTTEST color combination right now is Brown and Blue. Some say it
represents earth and sky.

Use nature’s products-some must haves at fall parties are pumpkins, wheat
bundles, berries, leaves (real or faux), and ivy.

Don’t forget extra lighting. Add small inexpensive lamps to cake tables, buffets, gift tables and head tables. They instantly warm things up.

Speaking of lighting…we still love using lots of warm lit candles…just be safe.

Add a touch of plaid! Plaid comes in so many combinations. Use it on one or two tables for accent or use plaid ribbon instead of solid ribbon. You can easily

Nowadays, the grooms responsibility can be a little more widespread than years ago. The groom can’t just show up the day of the wedding in a tux and say "I do". Grooms are participating in all aspects of wedding planning. Probably the most important job for the groom is to be the supportive and stable person that the bride may need at any given moment. This is certainly a small price to pay for a dream wedding. Right?

So, all of this means is that the groom will help out the bride by listening, talking, and maybe even helping in the decision making.Tips for being a supportive groom:
If your bide-to-be is feeling stressed and overwhelmed, suggest you do an activity together to get her mind off of it for a little while (this does not mean watching the big game on TV, unless she likes that!)

New Orleans Bride and Groom say “I Do” in Mississippi Shelter

When Trenice Williams evacuated from her New Orleans home last week, she brought along her wedding license in her purse. Good thing, because once she and fiancé Joseph Kirsh had been through the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, a ceremony was to take place.

The couple had planned to be married the day before the storm hit the Gulf Coast. With the help of a woman that they met in the shelter and the generosity of local businessman Bob Ford of the Sanctuary Golf Club, Trenice and Joseph were wed among about 3,000 other refugees at the Mississippi Coliseum about 190 miles of New Orleans. The couple said their vows before an Episcopalian Minister while many folks looked on.

Dress, flowers, jewelry, hair and makeup were among some of the things also donated to the bride and groom. Mr. and Mrs. Krish have lost all they had in the storm, but certainly did not give up on the bliss of marriage.

Fun Flip Flops

When trying to come up with ideas for bridal shower party favors, it's a good idea to give something that is useful, trendy and fun.

I think embellished flip flops fall into that category. The good thing about it is that you can make them yourself, easily. Try to get the shoe size of each of the guest before you begin the project. You probably could make an educated guess on a lot of them, since flip flops are pretty forgiving...but better to know the size if you can find out.

Some of the things you can embellish with are:

1. Silk Flowers, large or small glued on

2. Buttons glued on

3. Ribbons, narrow or wide tied on in any fashion you like

4. Strips of fabric tied on (and knotted) all the way up the straps. Tear the strips so the edges fray

5. Glue on shiny stones purchased at the craft store

Hurricane Honeymoon

We're settling down for the day waiting for Hurricane Katrina. It's not too severe, a minor storm compared to many that we've been through. It's mostly going to be a lot of rain. Not so bad if your just hanging out with family or friends. Really bad if you're supposed to be getting married or going on your honeymoon today. Since this is a vacation area there are probably a lot of people here today with spoiled wedding or honeymoon plans.

When I got married, we planned a cruise to Antigua...during hurricane season. Which by the way is from June all the way until November! Needless to say, a hurricane flew into the Carribean and our plans were ruined.

Fortunately, we discussed the hurricane possibilities with the travel agent before booking the cruise to make sure we could get our money back in case of a natural disaster. We ended up going to Disney World. It was rainy most of the time but we had a wonderful honeymoon and we saved some money as well.

The point is to always have a Plan B when making wedding and honeymoon arrangements...even if you don't live or plan your event in a tropical climate. Be prepared.

Twist on Unity Candle Ceremonies

Wedding Unity Candle lighting is growing in popularity. While some have known about for years, others have not. It might seem to be kind of old-world to gens X,Y and Z, but there are always ways to modernize and customize traditional things.

First, you can now get candles made with all kinds of words, graphics and pictures on them. If you are the creative type, have something cool added to yours that is all your own.
You don’t have to do the candle thing when everyone else does, why not make it part of your engagement dinner, rehearsal dinner or reception?

Here are some twists on the unity candle lighting:

Getting married on the beach? Why not have family members and/or friends light small torches or long candles, then pass fire to the couple, who then light one larger fire?

If you are having a small wedding in an intimate setting, have each guest light a votive and recite well wishes to the couple.

At the reception, have long containers with candles pre-lit stuck in sand. Then the couple can take fire from those and light a same candle.

At your engagement announcement, perform the traditional unity candle lighting, but pledge your commitment to one another in front of your family and friends.

Hey, make this your own thing. Make it as modern as you are. Or…do any combination you like!

Cool Wedding Transportation

There are all kinds of unusual and great things to be used for wedding transportation to the reception site. If you use your imagination you can come up with some of them.

One I want to tell you about is a great idea. I just happened to be riding down the street in a resort area I was visiting when I saw it. We were passing a church where a wedding was taking place and waiting outside for the conclusion of the wedding was a trolley car that takes people on tours. What a fun way to provide wedding transportation if you happen to have access to it.
You could take a few or a lot of people, depending on the size of the trolley. I think everyone would really enjoy it. As far as the cost goes, maybe you could get them to make a deal for you.

Wedding Vows?

You’ve been to weddings where the bride and groom give heart wrenching wedding vows. It’s very nice but you’re thinking, I could never do that because I would be crying so hard I would never get through it. Your fiancé is probably thinking that too but doesn’t want to say anything for fear of hurting your feelings.

Wedding vows are very personal and private if you want them to be. You really don’t have to do all that if you don’t feel that you can. After all, everyone knows that you truly love each other or you wouldn’t be there getting married and having everybody celebrate it with you.

You could just use the traditional ceremony or something very simple that says it all. Some officiates have very nice ceremonies that make the point that you want to get across.
Whatever you decide to do, it will be the happiest day of your life.

Love Those Cupcake Wedding Cakes

Why is it that some of the best ideas are so simple? And why does it take people so long to realize that a great idea has been right under their noses all the time?
Well, I'm glad somebody said, wait a minute, why don't people make cupcake wedding cakes.

What could be simpler, so easy and so inexpensive? You can make them yourself and they can be decorated in so many ways.

One really good way is to cover the tops and the sides, yes the sides, with frosting. Bake these with any recipe or cake mix that you like. Grease and flour the muffin tins, fill half full and bake. Don't put the paper liners in. They aren't necessary and the cupcakes won't have so many crumbs. They're easier to frost this way.

They can be decorated anyway you like and since the whole thing is frosted you can also decorate the sides.

Another good point about doing it this way is that guests don't have to peel off liners.

We at Cheap Chic Weddings have been noticing that lots of people are jumping on the cheap chic bandwagon.

The news on AOL today is that Walmart is looking to capture some of the cheap chic market with its sights set on acquiring Target. Even Martha Stewart (the "queen of everything beautiful" and I mean that in the most complementary way) has given lots of great ways to save on your wedding in her magazine, Weddings 2005.

We are glad that is the feeling now because we have been striving to make people realize that inexpensive can be nice and pretty. It can be accpomplished by getting your creative juices flowing, doing it yourself and sometimes thinking outside the box. Pleasing yourself is important for creating the dream wedding that looks like a million bucks.

However you picture your big day to be and look, you can make the dream come true in a less expensive way. Don't be afraid to try things and to ask for help from your friends and family. Everybody wants you to have a very special wedding, including us.

We say break away from the conventional “mints in a box”. You don’t have to be necessarily crafty to pull off some of the following clever wedding favor ideas.

* Personalized Chocolate Bars: Make your own personalized wrappers on your home
Computer and stick them right on a Hershey Bar!

* Burn a CD of your favorite music and give a copy to each guest. Be sure to add your

* Wrap a single fortune cookie in a simple cellophane bag for each guest.

* Buy or make a sentimental book mark.

Classic Mojito2 tsp. Fine Sugar3 Fresh Mint Sprigs3 Tbsp. Fresh Lemon Juice2 oz Rum - Light or DarkClub Soda

In a Glass, crush the mint and sugar. Add the lemon juice and mix well. Top with Ice. Add Rum and mix. Top off with cold club soda and garnish with a lemon slice and serve.

Don’t forget some colorful Latin decorations. You can pick some up at party stores or just fill the room with some homemade paper flowers!

The Best Wedding Shower Dessert:

Looking for a great dessert for that spring shower? I have it. This recipe was given to me by my husband’s grandmother and ladies always love it!

Pistachio Cake

1 Box of yellow cake mix
1 cup of oil
3 eggs
1 cup of Club Soda
1 small box of Pistachio Pudding
½ cup chopped nuts (optional)

Mix all ingredients with a hand mixer until well blended. Bake according to box directions for the pan you are using. I suggest a Bundt Pan. When the cake is done and cooled. Dust with sifted powdered sugar.

This cake comes out light green in color, moist yet airy and fluffy. You will be asked for the recipe or to make it again and again!
